Background of the study
Embedded clauses in Yoruba serve as an essential mechanism for adding depth and detail to communication. Among educated elites in Ibadan, the strategic use of embedded clauses reflects both linguistic proficiency and cultural sophistication. This study evaluates the patterns and frequency of embedded clause usage, investigating how these constructions contribute to complex ideas and rhetorical emphasis in formal and informal discourse. Educated speakers often employ embedded clauses to structure arguments, provide clarifications, or add subordinate information in academic, professional, and media contexts (Oluwole, 2023). Preliminary studies indicate that the adept use of these structures is associated with high levels of language competence and may signal social status. By analyzing speech samples and written texts from elites in Ibadan, this study aims to delineate the syntactic features of embedded clauses, comparing them with those found in everyday conversational Yoruba. It further explores whether these constructions have evolved under the influence of bilingualism and modernization, potentially diverging from traditional norms. This research contributes to broader discussions on syntactic complexity, language change, and the role of education in preserving refined linguistic practices (Adeyemi, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite recognition of embedded clauses as markers of advanced linguistic competence, there is limited research on their usage among educated Yoruba speakers in Ibadan. Preliminary evidence suggests that the frequency and complexity of embedded clause usage vary significantly, yet the underlying factors remain unexplored (Ibrahim, 2023). This study addresses the need for a systematic analysis of embedded clause usage and its implications for language proficiency and social identity.

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of advanced syntactic structures in Yoruba, offering insights into language evolution, education, and social identity. Its findings will benefit linguists and educators in understanding and preserving sophisticated language use among elites (Olu, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the analysis of embedded clause usage among educated Yoruba speakers in Ibadan. It does not cover other syntactic phenomena or social groups.
